As 1946 dawned, the 19,500 employees and officers of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Co. could look back on four busy and successful years of handling the heaviest traffic in the comapny's 79 years of operation. All this business was handled with steam power -- the Frisco had 591 locomotives in January 1946 -- with only 42 yard diesels in service. The first F-3 diesels were ordered in 1947, and by the beginning of 1952 only 26 steam engines were still active; the final steam run took place Feb. 29, 1952.
