| Burlington Route West is an account of Joseph C. Hardy's personal journey through life as an employee for the historic Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. The journey encompassed the Sandhills of western Nebraska, the Black Hills of South Dakota and the High Plains of eastern Colorado. During his varied career as a brakeman, depot telegraph operator and train dispatcher, Joe witnessed the last years of service by the romance-inspiring steam locomotive. He encountered a colorful cast of fellow employees who kept the "Q" running on schedule. Using his skills as both an accomplished photographer and writer, Joe provides a nostalgic look at the human personalities and magnificent machines that were needed to run a railroad in the middle years of the 20th century. | ||||||
