This is the story of Carryl E. Hadcock's career as a hostler, station helper, telegraph operator and depot agent for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and sucessor Burlington Northern Railroad, from 1946 to 1972. "Curly" worked at 56 different depots and towers on the the Lincoln, Omaha, Wymore and Casper divisions of the railroad. Although his career is unique in terms of his personal experiences, it is typical of the careers of thousands of agents and operators on America's railroads. His ability as a telegrapher and agent and his intimate involvement with the shippers, merchants and townspeople of the small communities where he worked are skills of the past.
